Light-matter interactions
Understanding photochemical events and reactions.
To be able to discuss the effects of ultraviolet (UV) and visible light on chemical substances, and on the mechanism of the photo chemical reactions.
Understand the mechanism of photosensitized reactions (energy transfer reactions).

1. Week  Introduction to photochemistry, photochemical reactions and events
2. Week  Electromagnetic radiation, wave and particle model, quantum theory, electromagnetic spectrum.
3. Week  Light-matter interactions, absorption, emission
4. Week  Atomic and molecular energy levels, excitations and spectrums.
5. Week  Coupling and energy level splitting, quantum numbers and term symbols, singlet and triplet states.
6. Week  Molecular orbitals and electronic transitions in molecules with UV-Visible photons.
7. Week  Jablonski diagram, radiative and radiationless transitions.
8. Week   Molecular dimension, motion and calibration points
9. Week  Midterm exam
10. Week  Potential energy curves; harmonic and anharmonic oscillator curves
11. Week  Photochemistry laws, Frank-Condon principle, radiative transitions, overlap principle
12. Week  Experimental measurements of light absorption and emission of molecules, quantum yield.
13. Week  Spin-orbit coupling, allowed and forbidden transitions, fluorescence-phosphorescence parameters, experimental examples.
