To acquire the information required to determine the role of beliefs in the formation and development of art.
To enable the students to acquire the skill to factually apprehend the works with themes selected from the Old Testament, Bible or mythological stor
To build up a systematic background directed towards art criticism.

 --COURSE CONTENT
1. Week  The importance of meaning analysis in the analysis of works of art; the relationship of form, content and meaning in the works of art is dealt with.
2. Week  The steps in the analysis of meaning in the works of art according to E. Panofsky is discussed by means of examples.
3. Week  General information about the Old Testament and Bible is given as well as the historical sources of Jewish and Christian beliefs.
4. Week  Creation according to the Old Testament, the flood and the Old testament prophets are explained by means of examples from the art of painting.
5. Week  The representations regarding Moses, the passage from the Red Sea and the ten commandments are examined. The representations regarding Samson and Da
6. Week  Representations about the life of Mary and Jesus are commented on.
7. Week  Representations about Passion, Resurrection, Doomsday and Mary’s Death are examined.
8. Week  The sources of Greek mythology are studied and themes about the universe, gods and the creation of man according to Homeros and Hesiodos are examine

10. Week  The characteristics of Greek-Roman gods and goddesses are studied by means of examples.

13. Week  The works based on the themes selected from The Illiad by Homeros are commented on.
14. Week  Representations with themes about the significant heroes from Greek and Roman mythology are studied.
