Profile of the Programme

Our departments education program is developed with the aim of providing a content fulfilling the necessary knowledge, skills and values required​ for the planning profession today as well as taking into consideration the expectations for the future of the profession.  In this regard, the courses (compulsory and elective) in the curriculum of our department are divided into three main groups according to the knowledge,skills and values necessary to be included in planning education programs:

1. Basic Planning Knowledge: Comprehension, representation and utilization of ideas and knowledge on planning, including associated perspectives from history, social science and design disciplines. The Aim and Descriptionof Planning, Planning Theory, Planning Law, History of Human Settlements and Planning, Future, Local, Regional, National and Global Context and etc.

2. Planning Skills: Utilization and application of knowledge to perform specific tasks required in planning practice: Research, Written, Oral and Graphical Communication, Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, Production of the Plan (planning, creation) and Implementation, Methods of Planning Process, Technology and etc.

3. Values ​​and Ethics: Knowledge on values, ethical and normative principles which form the basis for grounding and guiding planning in a democratic society: Professional Ethics and Responsibility, Governance and Participation, Sustainability and Environmental Quality,  Growth and Development, Social Justiceand etc.

In this context, there are 67 courses (240 credits) to be completed in 4 years in our department program. 53 of them are compulsory (199 credits), 14 of them are elective (41credits). 8 (18 credits) of the compulsory courses are the ones definedobligatory by the Higher Education Institution to be included in the university education program. In addition to these, there are Internship I and InternshipII courses which students must complete during the summer terms.

The most important part of the compulsory courses is the Planning Projects which are applied courses. These courses enable the transfer of the basic planning knowledge,values ​​and ethical principles acquired through education into planning skills. In these courses, human settlements of different scales at the focus ofcity and regional planning are examined and planning is practiced.

Most of the basic and compulsory courses (both departmental and Higher Education Institution courses) are completed in the fifth semester. In the last three semesters, elective courses that will enable the student to focus on the selected area of ​​specialization are dominantly included.

Elective courses consist of 1 Joint (2 credits), 1 Non-vocational (3 credits) and 12 Vocational(36 credits) courses. Students must complete at least eight elective courses based on the selected area of ​​specialization and at least one elective course from other areas of ​​specialization.

The elective courses included in the curriculum of our department have the qualifications to broaden the horizon of the students in various ways including multidisciplinary perspectives as well as enabling the prosperous utilization of general planning knowledge, skills and professional ethical values.

Elective courses are classified under three main modules in order to support the students'''' orientation towards specialization in the field of interest.

Module 1: Urban Planning and Urban Policies: This module constitutes of two sub-modules whichare “Urban and Social Policies” and “Urban Conservation”

Module 2: Regional Planning, Local Development, Environmental Policies: This module constitutes oftwo sub-modules which are “Regional Planning and Local Economic Development” and “Sustainability, Environment and Planning”

Module 3: Urban Design

In the program, there are prerequisites for some courses. In order to take these courses, it is necessary to be successful from the prerequisite course.

Program language is 30% English, CRP coded courses are in English.
